In the early 1980s, Ellie is forced to marry John, a scarred logging foreman, in her sister's place. Expecting a hot-tempered brute, she finds a rugged husband who adores her and a fierce mother-in-law who always has her back. Blessed with uncanny luck, Ellie discovers rare mushrooms and century-old ginseng in the mountains, turning the family's fortunes around.
